چکیده

Behavioral, anatomic, and electrophysiologic studies indicate that the nondecussated optic system is functionally incompetent and anatomically disorganized in albino animals. The number of nondecussated optic nerve fibers from the retina to the lateral geniculate nuclei, pretectal nuclei, and superior colliculi is significantly reduced in albino mammals, and the laminae of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus are abnormal. Visually evoked potentials were recorded from both hemispheres of human albinos of four different genotypes and from normally pigmented human beings under conditions of binocular and monocular illumination. There was a significant asymmetry between the evoked potentiab recorded from each hemisphere of monocularly illuminated human albinos, as compared to normally pigmented human beings. The data suggest that there is a disorganization of the nondecussated optic fibers in the human albino similar to that observed in other albino mammals. The abnormalities of the nondecussated optic system are apparently associated with several forms of albinism which result in retinal hypopigmentation.

Dissociated vertical deviation: evidence of abnormal visual pathway projection.

Abnormalities in visually evoked responses have been used to demonstrate abnormal optic nerve fibre projections in human albinos, who have anomalous nystagmoid movements. Using visually evoked potentials we tested the hypothesis that patients with dissociated vertical deviation (another group with anomalous nystagmoid movements) may have abnormal visual evoked responses similar to those of albi...

Possible Long Term Effects of Chemical Warfare Using Visual Evoked Potentials

Some studies have already addressed the effects of occupational organic solvent exposure on the visually evoked potentials (VEPs). Visual system is an important target for Sulphur Mustard (SM) toxicity. A number of Iranian victims of Sulphur Mustard (SM) agent were apprehensive about the delay effect of SM on their vision and a possible delay effect of SM on their visual cortex. This investigat...

Feature Extraction of Visual Evoked Potentials Using Wavelet Transform and Singular Value Decomposition

Introduction: Brain visual evoked potential (VEP) signals are commonly known to be accompanied by high levels of background noise typically from the spontaneous background brain activity of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Material and Methods: A model based on dyadic filter bank, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and singular value decomposition (SVD) was developed to analyze the raw data...

Comparison of the Wave Amplitude of Visually Evoked Potential in Amblyopic Eyes between Patients with Esotropia and Anisometropia and a Normal Group

Background: We compared the wave amplitude of visually evoked potential (VEP) between patients with esotropic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes and a normal group. Methods: The wave amplitude of VEP was documented in 2 groups of persons with amblyopia (15 with esotropia and 28 with anisometropia) and 1 group of individuals with normal visual acuity (n, 15). The amplitude of P100 was recorded mono...

Luminance-onset, pattern-onset and pattern-reversal evoked potentials in human albinos demonstrating visual system anomalies.

Most fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds have laterally placed eyes and primarily panoramic vision. These vertebrates usually have complete crossing of optic fibres at the chiasm, i.e., optic ganglion fibres originating from each eye terminate in visual centres of the contralateral hemisphere. One of the features of the mammalian visual system is the appearance of an uncrossed optic projection...
